The moment I saw the concept of Lush’s Soap Shower Jelly on social media, I knew I needed some. I never did get a chance to get any because I am not that great at ordering stuff online. I’m still a bit old school in that realm as I prefer to buy certain things in person in stores and personal care stuff is one of them. I mean, how do you know what something smells like if you can’t smell it?
Because of this and because I like a challenge, as well as doing my own health and beauty stuff, I decided to try to make my own. The first ones were definitely a failure as I made them far too jiggly. they did not hold up their shape well enough to use. These ones work well for using to wash your hands or even in the shower. I wanted to make them small because I found that if I made them too large, they would dissipate if left sitting out wet. That makes these essentially one time use, but this recipe makes about 2 dozen.
These can be made for less than $3-$5, depending on how much plain gelatin is where you live. If you are having a hard time finding it, look in the section where baking supplies are next to the no-bake boxed mixes for cheesecake or order Knox Plain Gelatin online.
p.s. gelatin like this is actually amazing for your skin!
DIY Citrus Soap Jellies
To Make DIY Citrus Soap Jellies you will need:
2 Packets of Unsweetened, Unflavored Gelatin
1/2 Cup Citrus or Unscented Dr Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap (or any scent you want.)
3 Drops Yellow or Orange Soap Coloring (or food coloring)
1 1/4 Cup Water
15 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
10 Drops Orange Essential Oil
Directions to Make DIY Citrus Soap Jellies:
Bring water to a boil. Add gelatin packets and stir until completely dissolved.
Add in the Dr Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap. Do not stir, but rather gently fold in. You don’t want to add too many bubbles.
Drop in your coloring to achieve the color you desire. Add in essential oils. Turn off the heat and remove from heat as well. Pour mixture into glass measuring cup with a spout.
Using silicone tray molds in any shape you desire, gently pour in the mixture. Place on a hard cookie sheet and gently tap on the counter to remove as many air bubbles as you can. Allow to completely set up before removing from the molds. This can take several hours. Do not set them into the freezer to cool as this will change it chemically and they won’t set up right after they thaw. I learned this the hard way.
Store them in a cool, dry and dark place. Take one out and lather it up for some good clean fun!
